Stephen Kavalkovich is the host of Rescue the Rescuer, the only show in the world geared toward first responders with mental health conditions including PTSD and Substance Abuse Disorder. He is also a speaker, coach, and director of development for Mental Health News Radio. Stephen was a paramedic for over 15 years in the tristate area, and was honored to serve as a rescue worker at the World Trade Center on 9/11/01 in New York City.

He has seen tragedy and suffering first hand for many years, but didn’t know he would be the one who needed saving. Stephen has worked to save the lives of countless overdose victims, and never understood how his colleagues could treat a hurting person poorly due to ignorance of the problem. He would eventually experience this treatment first hand when he was the one who needed help after it came to light that he was, himself, in need of saving.

It took him overdosing multiple times and being revived by former colleagues, losing his certification, career, marriage, and children to finally stop Stephen from heading down a dark path and into the light of recovery.

His focus and purpose at Rescue the Rescuer and Mental Health Radio is to open up the conversation about the underlying pain, trauma, and lack of coping skills that leads a person to self-medicate. Stephen believes that addiction should be treated as a mental health condition, and that if underlying mental health issues are treated early, addiction could be avoidable. If a crisis can happen to the rescuer himself who “should have known better,” then it could be said that no one is immune to the disease of addiction. Stephen shares his story and works in this field to give others the courage to voice their pain. Pain shared is pain lessened.

Stephen has expertise in Emergency Medical Care, First Responder PTSD and Substance Abuse Issues, Recovery Coaching, Intervention, Leadership, and Spiritual Studies. He is a member of the Southern Delaware Toastmasters International Club.

Stephen is available for coaching, mentorship, speaking engagements, guest interviews, content production, and consultation services. You may have seen Stephen on national and international TV, heard him in podcasts, or read about him in print media. For booking inquiries, visit the Rescue the Rescuer website at
