NAMI Forum – Dear Recovery: You Saved My Life

Join us as we welcome Dr. Patrick McElwaine to the NAMI Forum on Thursday, November 21, 2019. Dr. McElwaine is an Assistant Professor at Holy Family University’s Graduate Counseling Psychology Department, and a survivor of addiction and trauma. His presentation, ‘Dear Recovery: You Saved My Life’ will leave you inspired.

According to Dr. McElwaine, who is celebrating 10 years in recovery:

“Recovery is something to be proud of. Recovery from a perceived failure or weakness means that I can turn it into a strength. I want people to know my story. I want people to know you can be very successful in recovery. I wouldn’t change my life with anybody, and I don’t know if I would have said that 10 years ago.

“You can look at your diagnosis of being a drug addict and an alcoholic, or your diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, anxiety, or whatever it is, and you can say that it’s a death sentence. People are going to judge me by that. I’m weak. I’m a failure. I’m a loser. But the truth is, you can look at that potentially perceived weakness and turn it into one of your biggest strengths.”

Dr. Patrick McElwaine is an Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology at Holy Family University and a faculty member at the Beck Institute. Dr. McElwaine has over 20 years clinical experience in various settings. Dr. McElwaine is a member of multiple professional psychology organizations and he serves on the Montgomery County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Council. At settings including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), various school and hospital organizations, Pennsylvania Psychological Association (PPA) and the Lilly Conference, he has conducted numerous presentations related to mental health, addiction, stigma, and pedagogy.

In his free time, Dr McElwaine enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He enjoys running and is an avid sports fan and a diehard Eagles fan.
